Hi! I'm a Zine Tree!
So, I told myself over and over for years that what I REALLY wanted to do was start up a Zine Library! I couldn't fathom the idea of staying put long enough in one place to actually start up a space there, but I've finally decided that Calgary will have to do for now!
We already have around 200 zines, mostly personal, comic, and art zines, for the collection, and are working adamantly to get more! We need to get a po box on the asap so we can start sending out call outs for zine donations and give people a place to send them to! So if anyone wants to miraculously donate like $80 to cover the cost of renting a po box.... *cough*
I am currently working on Cataloguing all the zines that were donated at the Toronto Zine Fair I went to this august, as well as a bunch of awesome zines my old co-worker gave me before she moved to Montreal. After that, I am going to start going through my own personal zine collection, which will all be going to the zine library, and cataloguing those.
I really want to have zine summaries for all the zines at the library, with a breif description of the zine, some key words or subjects, what kind (ie. comic, perzine, music zine, political, etc) of zine it is, and the author with their contact info. I think this could be a really rad way for people to help out if they don't have a ton of time. I can just give them a stack of zines to read and enjoy, and then they can jsut write like a sentance or two about what the zine is about. If you are interested in helping in this way, please email us at thezinetreecollective@riseup.net
I am planning to talk to one space I had in mind for the zine library very soon. In the meantime, if anyone knows of any rad, central-ish, accessible, and FREE possible spaces for the library, please let us know!
AND if you want to donate some zines to our library, we promise to love you forever. Right now I don't have a po box, but you can just email us and we can work something out.
Love and Support,
Samantha Trees
